Below is a list
of RSS data feeds you should consider using on your site if appropriate.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it's a format designed
for sharing headlines and other Web content. RSS feeds are usually
news feeds. You can find an example of one on the bottom of our
"About
Us" page. The reason a well-optimized site
should have them is because the search engines like fresh content
that's constantly being updated. They will visit your site more
frequently and improvements to your optimization will translate
to higher search rankings more quickly.
In most cases
putting RSS feeds on your page should be left to an optimization
professional because of the technical knowledge involved. However
one way non-programmers can include RSS is by adding a blog
to your site. With most blog software, an RSS feed is automatically
built in, to where your readers can subscribe to your blog using
RSS feed readers. And you can easily set up your blog for free using
templates at blogging sites such as blogger.com,
where our site's blog was set up. You can also have it hosted for
free at these sites. It is better for your optimization if the blog
is located at your own site, but you do need to have a little tiny
bit of technical knowledge to do that, as follows:
- You will
be asked for the FTP server. This is almost always
simply ftp.yourdomainname.com. For example for
this site it is ftp.website-design-hawaii.com
- You will
be asked for the FTP username and password. This information
is provided to you by your site's host. If you don't
know who your host is because a webmaster set it up for you, she
should have the info you need.
- You will
be asked for the blog's filename. Just keep it
short and end it with .html or .htm. For example,
this site's blog is named blog.html and other
valid names are ourblog.htm or myblog.html. This is not the same
as the blog's title, which is the name a web
surfer would see.
- You will
be asked for the blog's url. That should be http://www.yourdomainname.com/yourblog'sfilename.
For example, our site's blog is at http://www.website-design-hawaii.com/blog.html.
