As was touched upon in some other articles, a big part of optimization
involves getting other sites to link to you so as to increase your
"link popularity", and this can cost you money. Reciprocal
linking is when you link back to a site in exchange for it linking
to you, and one advantage of using this strategy is that a lot more
sites will link to you for free with a reciprocal link than will
link to you without one. Another advantage is that these sites also
tend to have better link popularity than those that don't require
reciprocal links.
However, one big disadvantage of reciprocal links is that your
link to a site can often seem like it is only there so you can get
that site's link back to you, and the search engines generally don't
like any content that looks like it is aimed at them rather than
at actual users of a site. You need to try to have a logical reason,
related to the content of your site, for that link to be there.
For example, it makes sense for your Hawaii helicopter touring company
to have a page giving general information about Hawaii that includes
links to the Hawaii directories that link back to you. But including
links to more general directories that link to you would not make
sense.
Another, minor disadvantage is that you need to know a little about
programming if you are to put these links in yourself. But it will
be almost as easy for your webmaster to add these links as it is
for her to change the basic text on your site.
Since this page is talking about reciprocal linking, in this case
it makes perfect sense to include this list below of sites that
will link to you for free in exchange for a reciprocal link. Of
these, be careful only to use the sites you can link back to in
a way that relates to your site's content. Note that some sites
require your link to be on your HOME page, and that they often want
the link be worded in a specific way. I have used their desired
wording in the list. Also, link to them FIRST, and then ask that
they link to you. Just four to start with; check back later for
a longer list.

How to find sites like these on your own, with content
related to your site's content: Go to a search engine such
as Google, and type in a search phrase related to your site's content.
In the same search phrase box, also type in "add url",
in quotes. For example, for a Hawaii helicopter tour company site
:
Hawaii helicopter tours "add url"
This will give you a listing of sites that talk about Hawaii helicopter
touring and also have a place for you to "add url". Most
will require payment, but usually at least a few will only ask for
a reciprocal link. Other variations to try instead of "add
url" are "submit a site" or "add link".
